“God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant” (Romans 5:20, NLT). This highlights both the seriousness of sin and the surpassing greatness of God's mercy. Instead of leaving us condemned because of our sins, He responds to our need with an overflowing supply of grace through Jesus Christ.

“And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work” (Romans 11:6). There’s a clear distinction between grace and works that we must understand if we’re to avoid being deceived. Salvation is a gift that can’t be earned or deserved; if human effort contributed to salvation, grace would cease to be grace.

“And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord” (Exodus 19:8). When the people readily agreed to obey God's covenant before fully understanding the demands it would place on them, their response demonstrated good intentions but also the limitations of human commitment apart from God’s enabling grace. This serves as a reminder that obedience requires more than just enthusiasm, but also dependence on God.

“For Moses writes that the law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands” (Romans 10:5, NLT). Righteousness through the Law of Moses depends on perfect obedience, but no one can flawlessly keep God’s law. This highlights humanity’s need for salvation through faith in Christ rather than reliance on personal performance.

“Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last” (John 6:27, MSG). Temporary things satisfy for a moment, but Christ offers eternal life and enduring fulfillment. The challenge for believers is to keep eternal priorities ahead of worldly pursuits.

“Evil people get rich for the moment, but the reward of the godly will last” (Proverbs 11:18, NLT). Prosperity gained through ungodly means is short-lived, but a life lived in righteousness produces lasting benefits. God values faithfulness over immediate gain and reminds us to invest in what has eternal value instead of what merely produces short-term results.

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2). The world seeks to shape thinking, priorities, and beliefs, but Christians are called to avoid adopting values and behaviors contrary to God's will. Lasting change begins internally.

“For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death” (Romans 7:5). Sin produces destructive results; left unchecked, sinful desires result in spiritual death and brokenness. Freedom comes through Christ, not through self-improvement alone.

“No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father” (John 10:18). Jesus’ death wasn’t a tragic accident but a deliberate act of love and obedience, carried out according to the Father’s plan for salvation. Because He has authority over death, we can have confidence in His victory over the grave and His power to give eternal life.

“Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me” (John 14:30). Believers are called to eliminate spiritual footholds that give the enemy access. Sin can give him opportunities to influence our lives, but walking in obedience to God helps prevent such footholds from developing.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Bad things can happen to anyone, but trying to cope with them on our own can seem like a hopeless task. God assures us that no matter what happens or how painful the situation is at the moment, He causes beautiful things to come from it when we trust Him.

“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” (2 Peter 1:4).

People make promises all the time, but they often break those promises and let others down; by contrast, God’s promises never fail. The Bible promises that believing what it says about God’s grace allows Him to change us from the inside out, deliver us from whatever situations we’re facing, and make us His children.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit” (Psalm 51:10, 12)

God renewing us brings about change on the inside that works its way outward. We’re created as spiritual beings; when our hearts are turned back toward Him, our spirits will automatically seek Him out. We experience joy so deep that no words can describe it and we become truly free.

“Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices, and have clothed yourselves with the new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of being] renewed and remolded into [fuller and more perfect knowledge upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it” (Colossians 3:9, 10, AMPC).

Accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior makes us new creations. Our old sinful selves are gone forever, and our new nature is based on who God is. Our continual renewal is a process as we gradually become more like Jesus.

“And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear” (Isaiah 65:24).

Prayer is a life-saving link to God, and puts us into the heavenly realm. Constantly staying plugged in to God through a strong prayer life assures us that He’ll answer us promptly when we call on Him.

“Fear not, nor be afraid [in the coming violent upheavals]; have I not told it to you from of old and declared it? And you are My witnesses! Is there a God besides Me? There is no [other] Rock; I know not any” (Isaiah 44:8, AMPC).

Protection and stability are found only in God. When others panic at what they see going on in the world, we’re free from fear; when trouble overwhelms and drowns others, we find safety and secure footing by standing on the Rock that never shifts.

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deuteronomy 6:6, 7).

God gave us His Word as protection in the spiritual fight for our hearts and minds, but it’s only effective when we keep it close and meditate on it constantly. In ancient times, God’s commandments were inscribed on stone tablets; they’re now written in our hearts.

“Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works… You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only” (James 2:17, 18, 24, NKJV).

Faith and works go together; strong faith gives birth to corresponding actions that spring from what we believe. Faith is indeed important, but following through with works of faith demonstrates to others that our belief can translate into actions.

“He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD” (Psalm 112:7)

Most people operate in fear because they don’t know the love of God, and how this love pushes out all fear from the heart. Anchoring our hearts in His Word teaches us that He’s always trustworthy and He’ll never let us down; when bad things happen, they won’t be able to move us.
